Frequently Asked Questions
Are therapy appointments confidential?
Yes, therapy is confidential, and I will always keep your name, personal information, and all identifying information completely confidential. In the course of our work, I am happy to coordinate with your primary care physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, or other professionals, but will only do so with a release of information signed by you. The only limits to confidentiality are if it becomes clear that there is an immediate risk of imminent serious harm to yourself or others, or if there is reasonable suspicion of past or present abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, in which case as a mandated reporter I may be required by law to disclose information to appropriate authorities.
What types of clients do you work with?
I work with adults and adolescents experiencing excessive generalized anxiety, rumination, low self-esteem, relationship problems, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive symptoms, post-traumatic stress symptoms, adjustment issues, attention-deficit and/or hyperactivity problems, and other related conditions. I work with clients of any gender and background, as well as with clients who have extensive experience in therapy, or who have never been to a therapy appointment before. I currently am licensed only in Vermont, so I can only provide services to individuals residing in Vermont.
Do you take insurance?
Yes, I’m contracted with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicaid, MVP, and Cigna to bill for services. Of course, there is significant variation in the US regarding what your insurance carrier pays vs. what you are asked to pay per appointment, but you can figure out whether you have a copay by reaching out to your carrier’s customer service and asking about your plan’s coverage for mental healthcare.
Do you offer in-person appointments?
No, at this time I am only offering teleconference appointments via a HIPAA-compliant teleconferencing platform.
How long are therapy appointments?
Therapy appointments are usually 55 minutes, but it is possible to meet for 30-minute or 45-minute appointments as well. If you are paying for appointments yourself rather than using insurance, we can also do longer appointments, such as 90-minute and 120-minute appointments, when appropriate.
How frequent are therapy appointments?
Some clients meet with me weekly, others every other week, every three weeks, monthly, or on an as-needed basis.
How long do people usually go to therapy for?
Generally I would recommend giving it several months to try to make sustainable changes, but you are not committing to any particular duration of services, and you can stop meeting with me at any time. Sometimes people go to a therapist for years, other times people go for just a few months, and that’s perfectly normal. It’s also advised to meet with a few professionals when you’re looking for therapy, so you can be sure to find someone that you work well with.
How much is therapy if I don’t have insurance?
My usual fee is $125 per 55-minute appointment. I keep several spots for clients who need to pay a lower sliding scale fee, but these spots are not always available. Please feel free to ask, if you are in a difficult financial situation and need therapy.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask that clients give a minimum of 24 hours’ notice when cancelling or rescheduling an appointment, unless there is an emergency, illness, etc. If appointments are cancelled or rescheduled on less than 24 hours’ notice I apply a $50 fee, due to the fact that I hold a specific time for a particular appointment.
